Korean Foot & Ankle Society

The scientific organization dealing with research on foot and ankle disorders and trauma was first founded by a group of orthopaedic surgeons, namely Prof. In-Heon Park et al., in Seoul on June 12, 1991. Originally named the Korean Society for Surgery of the Foot, the organization was renamed the Korean Foot and Ankle Society (KFAS) on June 15, 2004.Immediate past president of KFAS was Il-Hoon Sung, MD, PhD (From December 2015 to November 2016) and current president is Jin Soo Suh, MD, PhD (Inje University Ilsan Paik Hospita l)KFAS, one of the most active academic divisions of the Korean Orthopedic Association (KOA), has been growing every year and there are now 357 full-fledged orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon members.

The scientific annual congress has been held every autumn since 1991, and the spring scientific congress has been held annually since 2003. Foot and ankle symposia targeting general orthopaedic practitioners and residents respectively have also been held annually. The foot and ankle trauma symposium and diabetic foot symposium are held biannually. The upcoming conference will be held in Cheongju on in April 14, 2017.The KFAS has also been interested in international academic relationships. On March 23-24, 2001, the 4th Asian Symposium of Foot and Ankle Surgery and 1st Scientific Meeting of AFFAS (Asian Federation of Foot and Ankle Surgeons) was successfully held in Jeju Island in Korea. The Society has a close scholarly relationship with the Japanese Society for Surgery of the Foot (JSSF), and the two societies alternate in supporting biannual traveling fellowships.

In November 2013, KFAS and the European Foot and Ankle Society (EFAS) held the first joint academic symposium in Seoul. Annual AOFAS meeting is also attended by many KFAS members.The Journal of Korean Foot and Ankle Society (JKFAS), the Society’s official journal, launched in 1997 and is published quarterly. The official language of the journal is Korean, but English-written articles by international authors may be submitted. The JKFAS began accepting articles through an online submission system in January 2014.
